Mauricio Carra makes CheckMat Riverview the best Jiu Jitsu school in South Hillsborough County, and I believe the case can be made that it is one of the best schools in Central Florida; and if you are unfamiliar with the Jiu Jitsu scene along the I-4 corridor that’s saying a lot. There are some heavy hitters in this part of the state. There are many schools with legit instructors, but I choose to have my family train at CheckMat because of the quality of instruction and service offered by Mauricio. He is a No-Gi Pan Am champ, a world champion, and a Léo Vieira black belt with a Rolls Gracie lineage. If you are unfamiliar with all this insider lingo let me put it another way, Mauricio treats every student like they are important. It doesn’t matter if he only has one student competing at a tournament, I’ve seen him give up a Saturday and drive across the state to support just one student. That kind of dedication is rare and it is the reason why I trust Mauricio to teach my son and daughter.

Finding Checkmat Riverview was a stroke of luck and it came right on time for me. I was in need of a push to rev up my weight loss journey... Jiu Jitsu and Jeremy was the answer.
He is passionate about the subject as any good teacher should be. He is super patient in explaining all the moves we're learning at the time. While I can't get into some of those moves, he helps modify for me.
They make you feel like family once your foot steps on the mats.
