Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Roll through our FAQs: Everything you want to know about BJJ and our gym

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art focusing on grappling and ground fighting, enabling a smaller person to defend against a larger one through technique and leverage and also serves as a form of physical and mental discipline, promoting principles such as respect, perseverance, and discipline, making it not only a method of self-defense but also a way to improve one’s health, fitness, and character.

No, you do not need to be in peak physical condition to start BJJ. People of all ages and fitness levels are welcome. BJJ training will gradually improve your fitness, flexibility, and strength over time.

If you don’t have a gi (the traditional BJJ uniform) or a rash guard (a close-fitting top), you can start with comfortable athletic clothing, such as a t-shirt and shorts.

BJJ is generally safe when practiced correctly under the guidance of experienced instructors. Like any contact sport, there is a risk of injury, but precautions are taken to minimize this risk.

This depends on your goals, schedule, and physical condition. Beginners are usually advised to start with 2-3 classes per week to allow their bodies to adapt to the new movements and demands of the sport.

Absolutely. BJJ is for everyone, regardless of gender. Many girls and women practice BJJ for self-defense, fitness, and sport. We offer a welcoming and supportive environment for female practitioners.

* Boys and girls, men and women may be trained separately or together, depending on each individual’s comfort level.

The progression and promotion through belt ranks are influenced by the student’s dedication, athletic ability, and character, unfolding in the following manner:

Children and Teenagers up to 15 years old: From White to Grey: 6 months-1 year; From Grey to Yellow: 1-2 years …

16 years and older: From White to Blue: 1-2 years; From Blue to Purple: 1-3 years …

The journey to a black belt in BJJ is highly individual and can take anywhere from 8 to 10 years. It requires dedication, consistent training, and a deep understanding of the art.

Yes, there are local, national, and international competitions for BJJ practitioners of all levels here at Checkmat Riverview. Competing is not mandatory, but it can be a valuable experience for those who choose to participate.

BJJ offers numerous benefits, including anti depression effects, improved physical fitness, confidence boost, mental resilience, social networking, self-discipline, self-defense skills, problem solving skills and many others. It also fosters a sense of community and belonging, as practitioners often form close bonds with their training partners and instructors.

No, daily practice is not required. Training frequency should fit your goals and lifestyle. However, it’s important to remember that advancing through belt ranks requires consistent training to develop the necessary skills and knowledge.

Consistent training, even if not daily, promotes physical and mental benefits, personal growth, and a sense of community. The key is consistent effort and enjoying the journey, which leads to significant improvements in well-being and skills over time. Regular attendance is crucial for progression in BJJ.

Having started my BJJ training late in life, I'm truly blessed to be surrounded by such fine people. Having grandkids, it's great seeing the kids blossom into fine, confident humans. Thanks, Professor Mauricio, and the upper classes for a great training experience. I'm learning a lot and have never been so fit.
